An historic occasion for Holmes Chapel RUFC as they met Congleton nomads for the first time. A game played with great spirit as both sides showed they can still play, despite the need for more oxygen breaks!

Chapel with home advantage started the better, but initially the Congleton defence was strong and they cleared their lines. Congleton then attacked chapel inside their 22, but good tackling from Martin Davis kept them at bay. Strong running from Matthew Griffiths and Naz Sherwani game chapel more good possession.

Chapel then got their game together, John Thompson making an initial break allowing speedy winger Steve Johnson to beat several on-coming defenders and score under the posts. Chapel then bagan to relax, Nick Tompson was controlling the breakdown and big Darren Saffill and Rich Cadd were making the hard years. Further tries followed in the half fom Cadd, Cocker, Saffill, Davies and Canavan, giving the home side a healthy half time lead.

Chapel’s inspiration captain Ian Gordon ordered more of the same in the second half, but again Congleton had different ideas, the youngsters in their side were putting in some big hits, disrupting chapel’s game. They then began to create chances of their own, but couldn’t quite find that final pass to get on the score sheet.

Chapel then scored again a fantastic individual effort from John Thompson, was followed by another from Saffil and Davis, Ian Lightfoot also got on the scoring as chapel finished the game strongly. The final whistle whitsle brough and end to a good game of rugby enjoyed by many supporters and the veterans mounted their Zimmer frames and headed for the bar.

Both teams are looking forward to a re-match later in the year.
