Win marred by unfortunate injury to skipper Moss

This Saturday, Chapel took on Didsbury Toc H at Station Road. The previous encounter had been an open and attacking game that Chapel had edged 22-10.

The game started with both teams battling for possession and territory. Both teams looked defensively sound and neither teams’ attacks were able to break them down. The game stayed at 0-0 until Chapel opened the scoring with a wonderful try. A Didsbury kick was collected well by scrum half Andy Davies inside his own 22, he passed to centre Dave Steer who tied in 2 men before offloading to winger Joe Baskerville who beat 2 men and made 30 metres, before neatly popping it to supporting full back Bob Hamilton who tied in the final defender before passing to flanker Tom Chambers who was able to race to the line. The game continued in the same way with both sides getting their share of possession and territory but both defences coming out on top.

Chapel were keen to edge further ahead in the second half as they knew Didsbury were capable of scoring tries if given the chance. The boys in blue started the half in great form, the forwards were carrying hard and making great yards in contact. Fly half Michael Lightfoot was enjoying having his pack on the front foot and was making excellent decisions pulling the strings in the midfield. The Chapel attack was varied, and the away defence was starting to stretch. A penalty for the home side was converted by Andy Davies. This was soon followed by a great forwards try. A break off the base of the scrum by number 8 Dom Moss put Chapel within 10 of the try line. The forwards opted for power play and after numerous picks and goes were able to drive over the line with Tom chambers the man to score. This try was certainly a team effort though. Didsbury responded with one of their own after a tired Chapel defence left a hole in the midfield. Chapel almost immediately responded with a similar try to the second. A tap penalty from second row Mark McEnaney put the home side just yards from the line. Big prop Will Mitchell picked up the ball and was always going to be unstoppable from that distance making the score 22-7. Chapel saw out a 10-minute attacking onslaught from the away side to see the game out.

A superb performance from the lads in blue. Chapel looked excellent in defence and clinical in attack. Every player averaging at least an 8/10, however, the standout was winger Joe Baskerville who looked unplayable on the wing.
