It was a trip to Helsby for the boys this week in the League Cup. Helsby were going in to the match unbeaten so far this season and top of the Holmes Chapel’s league. This was set to be a tough affair! Holmes Chapel arrived as group, focussed and ready to go. After a short intense warm up the game kicked off 10 minutes early.
The game kicked off with a high ball taken comfortably by the Chapel pack. Some swift hands led to structured play side to side across the pitch. Chapel were beginning to stretch Helsby early. Unfortunately a rogue kick and some lacklustre tackling from the lads let Helsby’s dangerous number 15 slip through for an early try. Fortunately the kick missed and Chapel knew they had started well. It was just a case of keeping their structure and focussing on the task in hand.
Fortunately the breaks came for Joe Baskerville and Luke Cheetham; both of whom showed some great finishing and pace to take the game to 5 – 15 to Chapel. The inform Joe Baskerville showed some great footwork and conviction to get his brace.
After the break, Helsby came back with vengeance – they weren’t going to give up their unbeaten home record easily. They scored a try under the posts after some heavy forward play. Making the game 10 – 15 they continually piled on the pressure. Chapel managed to take a penalty to take the came to 18-10. Another try from Helsby made the game 18-15 as they hit the post with the conversion.
It was now time for Holmes Chapel to step up their game – their structure, lineout and scrum had been causing Helsby problems all game – it would be a shame to let things go to waste.
They took to the game to Helsby and camped out in their half with some structured play and crash balls. This lead to another penalty as Helsby tried to cope with the pressure. It also caused a number of back to back scrums on the Helsby five metre line. The pressure in the scrum lead to a very late try from the number 8 Dave Steer off the back of the solid set play.
The game ended in an away win at 28 – 15 to Holmes Chapel.
We would like to thank you Helsby for a challenging match played in the right spirit. We have also taken note of the after game bar activities – which we all enjoyed – so much so that we will be rebranding it and calling it our own. We look forward to welcoming Helsby to our place when we play them in the league.
