Saturday Chapel travelled up to fellow promotion achievers Whitchurch. Since promotion to division 3, the two sides had experienced different degrees of success with Chapel at the top of the table and Whitchurch around the middle.
The game started and the difference in table positions showed as the visitors took control from the off. Andy Davies at 10 was dictating play and the forwards were offloading well. A break from Dan Martin saw him offload to Davies who was able to release outside centre Joe baskerville for the first score of the game within 5 minutes. Davies soon got himself on the score sheet after big second row Makka broke a couple of tackles and offloaded neatly. The away side continued to pressure and powerful number 8 conor Gavin crashed over from 5 yards out, nearly taking down the post on route to the try line. After 20 minutes, a mixture of Whitchurch pressure and Chapel complacency changed the game. The home side scored a break away try and continued to threaten for the remainder of the half. Chapel were unable to retain their foothold in the game and began forcing offloads and running without support which meant Whitchurch could turn over possession after nearly every Chapel attack.
Half time came and 2 changes were made with no nonsense tight head Jimmy Hamilton coming on to sure it up alongside the energetic flanker Craig Wardle.
Chapel continued to force play but were more destructive in their ball carrying which meant holes began to appear. Jim Moss was next on the score sheet as he raced through beating several defenders with a combination of power and footwork. Young full back ally lightfoot soon added to the scoring with some excellent support play, before prop will Mitchell was in the right place to pounce on the end of a quick penalty by captain dom moss. The home side weren't done yet though and scored a very well worked backs try to reduce the deficit. Baskerville and gavin both added an extra try to their tally with the outside centres being the pick of the afternoons try. He outdid his centre partner and was able to jink and power his way through several tackles before racing away to finish nicely underneath the posts. The afternoon ended 14-50 to the boys in blue and gold. Not the prettiest performance with a large percentage of handling errors, however Chapel were a class above the opposition and were able to make this tell with some well worked tries.
MoM for the second week running went to prop Rob Moore who was excellent both in attack and defence.
Chapel would like to thank Whitchurch for some excellent hospitality and a very enjoyable game.
