Chapel graft a win against tough Aldwinians side
The Holmes Chapel boys travelled to Aldwinians RUFC to take on their 2nd XV in what would be a tough game for Chapel. Warm ups and team run-throughs set the team up in the right mind set as they set themselves up to receive the kick off, under the captaincy of Mark Mcenaney.
From the off the Chapel boys put in 100% with crash ball from the off from Dan Martin to tidy up. As forwards piled in to secure the ball, Andy Davies swiftly distributed the ball to Chapels resident number 10 Mike Lightfoot who put his foot through the ball to give the boys the territory in Aldwinians 22.
From the lineout a quick Chapel defence was able to wrap up the Aldwinians, allowing Joe Foulkes to turn the ball over and win back possession. With more tactical crash balls from Will Mitchell and Conor Gavin, the backs were eagerly awaiting the ball. Quick and steady hands allowed the ball to be swooped up by Jim Moss who was able to securely nest the ball over the Aldwinians try line.
Aldwinians were hot off the restart, keen to level the score and thanks to a nice bit of footwork on their part, were able to sneak through a lapse in Chapels defence, bringing the score to 7-7.
In the second half, Chapel knew they had to make it count if they wanted to secure the win. Opting to use the accurate boot of Mike Lightfoot to gain territory, the Chapel boys were spending most of their time in the opposition half. Keeping cool and calm, they kept grafting and eventually made the most of their penalties and opted to kick at goal.
Andy Davies reliable boot brought Chapel to a 13-7 win over Aldwinians 2’s, who definitely didn’t let up for the boys.
Man of the match this week goes to Mike Lightfoot for the territory Chapel gained from his boot.
