Road trip success

Holmes Chapel extend lead at top of table with win over Oswestry
After last week’s win in the cup, Holmes Chapel’s thoughts returned to the league with an impressive win over Oswestry. Holmes Chapel brought some great support with them as they embarked on another ever popular away day coach trip. This game was also club captain Tom Chambers’ last game of the season as he leaves us to promote Holmes Chapel Rugby Club in South East Asia and Australasia.
The game started somewhat slowly; muddy ground and some very large Oswestry forwards made it hard for Chapel to gain any kind of momentum. Eventually superb individual work from winger Angus Morison gave Holmes Chapel their first try of the game. The score was converted by the ever reliable Andy Davies, this week featuring at fly half rather than his more usual role at scrum half. Oswestry were able to retaliate very quickly by kicking for goal from a penalty and reducing Chapels lead to 4. Morison once again was involved as a great offload to full back Jack Cottam allowed the young back the space to cross the try line. Davies once again added the conversion. Captain Tom Chambers scored a try to increase Chapels lead, quickly followed by Oswestry scoring a try of their own from a lineout maul. Good work in the back row from Dom Moss and Ollie Lawrence gave Jim Bowbeer clean ball at 9, and the back line was able to run some nice moves. A try from substitute centre Nic Clawson rounded off the half. The score of 28-8 to Holmes Chapel somewhat flattered the visitors as they were far from their best.
The second half began and Oswestry’s team talk had clearly done the trick as they piled the pressure onto Holmes Chapel. An Oswestry centre broke the line and looked certain to score until Nic Clawson used every last bit of pace to dive and catch the Oswestry man, preventing an otherwise certain try. Oswestry kept displaying dominance throughout the early parts of the second half and finally their efforts paid off in the form of another try. This time the try was converted. This seemed to spark Chapel into action and from this point on did not give away another point. The visitors line outs had been superb all day and when Dom Moss collected the ball at the back of the maul, the Chapel forwards were able to push their way over the line for 5 points. Mark McEnaney also scored a second half try and Tom Chambers added a second. After the captains try Andy Davies missed the conversion. Davies’ kicking record for the game would finish at a very impressive 8 successful kicks out of 9 attempts. Gavin Paton moved from second row to full back and seemed to make more of an impact; he cut a superb line through the Oswestry backs and scored a superb individual effort. Nic Clawson added another try and the game came to a close. The final score was Oswestry 15 – 61 Holmes Chapel.
After the game, Holmes Chapel enjoyed Oswestry’s wonderful hospitality in the bar. Captain Tom Chambers was named man of the match in his final game and had the following to say “I have enjoyed every second of leading the golden boys of Holmes Chapel into battle and I can honestly say it has been a pleasure to play with every single one of the lads. I am confident that after my departure the winning streak can be maintained and that Dom Moss will do a fine job leading a team that has a wonderful amount of talent and spirit.”
Holmes Chapel would like to thank Oswestry for a great game and their wonderful hospitality and wish them the best of luck in their remaining fixtures.
