Holmes Chapel 26 – 0 Helsby
Holmes Chapel 1st XV recorded their second win of the season last Saturday when they defeated Helsby with a good all-round performance. Chapel started the match well although good defence from the visitors kept the scores level for most of the first half. Chapel were eventually rewarded for their patience (as well as their dominance in the scrum) with 2 tries before the interval, the first was a rare score for prop Ian Lightfoot and the second came on the stroke of half time with Skipper Mike Cottam touching down after the forwards pushed over the line from a close-range scrum. Both tries were converted by Stewart Butters.
After the break, Chapel weathered an early storm of Helsby attacks before regaining the upper hand and added 2 further scores to secure a bonus point. Kristian Clowes burrowed over in the corner for his first points of the season, and this was followed by a superb try from young winger Tom Lowe who beat several defenders to seal a handsome victory for Chapel.
Tries: Ian Lightfoot, Mike Cottam, Kristian Clowes, Tom Lowe
Conversions: Stewart Butters (3)
Star Man: John Shuff / Jed Wragg
Next week the 1st XV have a week off before travelling to Knutsford for their next fixture. The 2nd XV will be away from home taking on Crewe and Nantwich.
