Despite having to play the fixture up the road in Congleton, the 1s put in a dominating display

Holmes Chapel went into this away fixture vs Widnes in fantastic form, and a win would put them in a strong position to fight for promotion in the remaining matches. A very strong team meant confidence was flowing in the group. Although there was a strong wind as storm Ciara started to stretch her legs, the sun was shining and the ground was firm underfoot so a perfect day for the boys in blue to show what they can do.
The game started with an early penalty to Chapel which Andy Davies slotted between the posts. However Widnes were then able to bounce back after the backs utilised an overlap on the open-side and shipped the ball well down the line to finish in the corner, score 3-5. Chapel turned it up a gear as prolific try scorer Luke Cheetham received the ball after a well worked scrum move and outpaced his winger to score in the corner – Davies slotted the conversion to make the score 10-5.
What followed was a dominant display from Chapel, in-particular neat combinations with Dom Moss, Andy Davies, and Dan Partington setting up Luke Cheetham to run in unopposed on 2 further occasions, completing his hat-trick in the first half. Both conversions were nicely struck by Davies to make the score 24-5. Just before half time however, Widnes brought themselves back into a game after a neat move in the backs led to their fullback going under the posts. The conversion was kicked to make the half time score 24-12.
With the wind now behind them, Chapel came out in the second half firing. Dan Partington was able to cap a strong performance with a well-worked try, this was followed by a great support line from Rob Moore 50 metres out to go under the sticks. Both were converted to make the score 38-12. Luke Cheetham started to get annoyed with other people stealing some of the glory and so stole the ball off his inside man and again was able to gas his way over the line.
Liam Gavin showed is power and pace as he wriggled out of a few tackles and sprinted half the length of the pitch to score his first try of many for Holmes Chapel 1st team. Andy Davies completed a perfect day with the boot by kicking the conversion. Widnes managed to score with the last play of the game to consolidate a mixed performance, however the damage had been done.
Final score: 52-17
A fantastic result for Holmes Chapel with every player performing to a very high standard, making it difficult for returning players to retain their shirt. Man of the match goes to Luke Cheetham for bagging lots of tries to annoy the absent Tom Chambers, the closest contestant for most tries this season. Next week, we travel to top of the league Wilmslow in the biggest game of the season so far.
