Chapel travelled to title contenders Altrincham & Kersal on Saturday after ending their losing streak with a well-structured victory over Northwich. With ground to make up in the league it was vital that Chapel kept their composure to gain momentum against a strong team. The selected team was meaty with big units in the pack Conor Gavin, Mark McEnaney, Dan Martin and Rob Moore all well positioned to dominate up front.
The game started poorly when a kick off went unclaimed and the following line-out led to a strong driving maul by the Altrincham pack to score in the first few minutes of the match. The conversion was missed but Chapel were already chasing the game.
The poor start woke Chapel up and the boys in blue responded almost instantly. A solid set-piece provided the backs with clean ball and David Steer was able to break through the centres before off-loading to a supporting Tom Chambers who crossed over the line. Andy Davies slotted the conversion and Chapel were back in the lead. Another Tom Chambers score after some pick and goes with the forwards and the conversion from Andy Davies extended Chapel’s lead, however discipline fell and regular penalties were being conceded which led to Tom Chambers & Dan Martin both being sin-binned in the space of 2 minutes. Down to 13 men, Altrincham were able to score with relative ease. The conversion was slotted: Score 12-14.
Chapel played brilliant rugby whilst down to 13 men and kept possession well to run the clock down. In the second half, with Chapel back to full strength, Mark McEnaney drove over the line from the back of a ruck and Tom Chambers also pounced on a loose ball and beat the full back to but Chapel in a comfortable position for the last 15 minutes.
Chapel finished very strongly, with a maul from a line-out that Conor Gavin was able to peel off and ground the ball over the line, followed by another Tom Chambers breakaway try bringing his tally up to 4.
A great win and big credit to the forwards who dominated the entire game up front.
