1st XV loose out to title contenders

Holmes Chapel 12 - 41 Liverpool Collegiate

Holmes Chapel 1st XV lost for the first time in 6 matches when they played their final home game of the season against Championship contenders Liverpool Collegiate last Saturday. Although this was a disappointing result, Chapel will be pleased with the way a much-changed side showed plenty of determination and spirit, refusing to give up till the final whistle. Veteran flanker Martin "Chip" Davis returned to 1st XV action alongside debutant Dave Price in the back row. Mitch Lawrence also made his 1st XV debut on the wing, and both newcomers look like they will continue to challenge for 1st team places next season.

Chapel's performance was strong in parts, however mistakes were allowing Collegiate opportunities to gain territory and put points on the board. The visitors have already been promoted and are still fighting to win the league, so were not about to waste any chances to keep the pressure on in the title race. Chapel were struggling to win any line-out possession, which meant they were unable to utilise any of their pace behind the forwards. Tries from Ed Meyrick and Paddy Kennedy meant they had something to show for their efforts, however too many errors, combined with some good play from Collegiate meant the final margin was a convincing win for the visitors.

With no 1st XV game next week, Chapel will finish the season away to Ellesmere Port on April 18, as they look to complete an extremely successful season in style. They defeated Port 50-0 on the opening day, however their hosts have improved a great deal since that day and Chapel will not be expecting an easy game.

There is no rugby at Station Road this Saturday, however on Good Friday the 2nd XV take on Altrincham Kersal with a 2pm kick off.

Holmes Chapel RUFC would like to thank Pochins, Wymans, and AUF Leasing for their continued support.
