This weekend saw us welcome Wilmslow 3 to station Road in what was a landmark day for club. It had been four years since the club bar had shut and today was the day it was due to reopen. With this in mind, Chapel were keen to put on a show for the supporters and RFU Officials who had come down to mark the occasion.
The game started with Chapel in control from the off, some strong carrying from centre gav paton and second row Dan Martin saw us make some steady yards. Mike Lightfoot was dictating play from 10 early on with some clever kicking and some excellent organising of the pack. It wasn't long before the pressure told and number 8 Matt Lawrence crashed over off the back of a well worked line-out. The flood gates then opened and Chapel threatened the Wilmslow defence every time the ball was in hand. A number of different players including ally lightfoot and nath Stewart got on the score sheet. After 20 minutes of dominating Chapel took their foot off the gas and let Wilmslow take a foothold in the game. They kept the ball well and some strong forward play made the Chapel defence work hard. Despite the pressure, the defence held out well and capped off the half with a try of their own against the run of play.
This resilience in defence seemed to take the wind out of Wilmslow sails. Coach stanny gave out his instructions at half time and the boys responded well. Some early scores from forwards Tom Chambers and Makka settled the nerves. Chapel continued to dominate the play and looked like scoring with every attack. Both the half time substitutions came on and made a huge impact with Rob Moore getting on the score sheet shortly after coming on. The game ended with a final score of 65-0. All in all a decent performance from the lads in blue and gold.
We would like to thank Wilmslow for playing the game in great spirits.
It's fair to say the win was celebrated in our new bar.
