Smooth Sailing For The Boys In Blue

It was a cloudy day in the village of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire and the Chapel squad were getting ready for the return fixture with bottom of the table Eagle. There was confidence in the air as the boys warmed up and made their way onto the pitch, but they knew not to get complacent as the last time these teams met saw a defeat for the boys in blue and gold.

Kick-off and both teams looked ready from the off as big hits from both sides put them at a standstill. The game looked as if it was going to be a physical one with the defence on both teams looking sharp with big hits coming from Callum Grant-Smith and Dave Steer. Chapel managed to suck the defenders in before passing the ball out wide to the backs. The line was broke by Jack Cottam who had come in from full back, and passed back inside to Bob Hamilton who crossed the white wash for the first try of the day. Conversion kicked by Andy Davies, 7-0. The game restarted with the exact same ferocity as before. The Eagle defence put up their best at the breakdown, but out wide they were no match. The same tactic paid off for the backs as Jed Wragg ran in the 2nd. Conversion kicked by Andy Davies, 14-0. Kick off again and Eagle looked keen to regain the 2 scores that they had already lost to the home side as they began to use their backs to good effect with crash balls off their 10. Eagle were making their way out of their 22 with a driving maul when flanker Tom Chambers managed to rip the ball and stroll in unopposed for the third try of the afternoon. Davies adding the extras to make it 21-0. Chapels exit strategy from kick offs was working well with Dan Martin and Dom Moss claiming the high balls before setting up yet another Chapel attack. A simple hands move called by Mike Lightfoot opened up the Eagle defence and Jed Wragg found himself with plenty of room to run into after Nathan Stewart's dummy run tied in several defenders. Wragg getting his second of the afternoon and Davies trusty boot adding the extras, 28-0. The next try came just minutes later after Bob Hamilton cut an excellent line in off the wing to receive the ball from centre Jim Moss. Hamilton able to finish underneath the posts making the conversion easy, 35-0. A sliced kick off fell into the grateful hands of Dom Moss who was able to run into Eagles 22 before popping outside to prop Dave Steer who had made an excellent support run. Steer brimming with confidence opted to take a drop goal conversion. The result was as expected, the ball sliced horribly wide from right underneath the posts, 40-0. An act well worth the "dick of the day" accolade. The final try of the half was scored by influential number 8 Jon Griff who powered over from the back of a scrum, Davies re-taking over kicking duties and showing why props shouldn't kick. Score 47-0.

Despite not conceding a single point, coach Stanny wanted the team to concentrate on their defensive shape as there was a number of holes which could have caused Chapel problems. A couple of changes at half time saw Ed Chappel come on for Will Mitchell in the front row, Angus Morison come on at outside centre and Joe Maddock, who had played for Eagle in the first half, come on on the wing.

Chapel started where they left off in the first half by taking control of possession in the off. Mike Lightfoot now playing 12 was looking classy and Eagle were struggling to get near him. He was starting to bring in the players outside him who looked like scoring every time they received the ball. A break from Ed Chappel saw a neat pop to the supporting Joe Foulkes who was able to find Angus Morison on his inside shoulder who raced through to score the first try of the second half. Conversion added 54-0. Some good work around the rucks limited the Eagle possession and soon resulted in Chapel pressure. Makka now in the second row was causing the Eagle defence issues with some strong running. A number of simple passes out wide led to Bob Hamilton getting his third of the afternoon. Davies however unable to add the extras. 59-0. The pack who had dominated set pieces throughout was giving Davies clean ball who was in turn able to bring in the pace men outside. A number of strong crash runs from Jim Moss and Dave Steer tied in defenders in the midfield before Mike Lightfoot screamed for the ball and threw a long pass to the on-running Harry Jeanes who opted to go through his opposite number rather than round him. A well worked try that the defence could do nothing about, Davies back on form, score 64-0. Eagle, despite the score line, never let their effort drop and continued to press Chapels attack. An Eagle scrum just outside their 22 gave them the opportunity for some rare possession. They held their own well before the number 9 opted to go down the blind side. A poorly timed pass fell into the arms of a sharp Andy Davies who raced down the wing to score the final try of the afternoon before adding the extras. Final score 71-0.

MoM was given to Mike Lightfoot who impressed at both fly half and inside centre. His breaks and simple passing kept the Eagle defence in constant turmoil. Chapel looked dangerous offensively and benefitted most when attacking moves were kept simple. There were areas for concern though in the defence. Despite, not being breached the line wasn't as structured as the coaches would have liked. A side allowed more possession might have targeted these holes and found a way to get points on the board.

Chapel would like to thank Eagle for a game played in good spirits.
