Two in a row for the first team

Chapel arrived to New Brighton with the aim of improving of recent hard fought performances which have resulted in narrow wins and a narrow loss. This would be a chance to get back in to the groove albeit New Brighton is never an easy place to go.
It took only one minute for Chapel to take the lead - a well caught kick off and break from Dave Steer leading to an early score for Chapel number 10 Mike Lightfoot. Dave’s well timed off loads would prove dangerous all afternoon for the home side. With such an early score it unfortunately gave Chapel an unfounded sense of security. This meant that the pace of the game diminished as people took their foot off the gas which lead to a number of unforced errors. There were a few moments of individual drive from the likes of Mark McEnaney who managed to crash over for two further tries as well as tries from Joe Foulkes and Dave Steer.
New Brighton hit back with a try of their own before the break. With such a big pack it would be difficult to keep them at bay without the necessary respectful effort from the Chapel defence. Some words and changes needed at half time despite it being 7 - 31 to the away side.
Chapel had the kick after the break. The ball is sent high before it hits the floor and bobbles around the New Brighton pack before being swiftly kicked out. Great pressure and tempo was now being shown by the Chapel forwards. Chapel put 4 in the line just outside the 22, the ball is flew straight off the top, caught by number 9 Andy Davies before it was flung out to Dave steer with another great offload to Rob Moore. Rob with his first touch of the game manages to push one off before stepping another to slide over.
From there New Brighton take the kick, the ball is sent high and short to the Chapel pack. The ball is patted back to Dom Moss before being passed out for some great pacey attacking play. This gave Chapel a renewed sense of vigour and lead to two successive scores from Jim Moss who tested them all afternoon. Andy Davies kept the board ticking over with the kicks for a 7 - 48 lead.
With a minor slip New Brighton were given the chance to hit back through some strong running and lacklustre tackling from Chapel. The only man to atone for that was the young Sam Cook who’s tackling and forward play was impressive all game earning him Man of the Match.
Further scores from Dave Steer meant Chapel won the game with a flattering 12-62. There is definitely plenty to work on ready for the visit to Liverpool Collegiate next week. We would like to thank New Brighton for a good test and a game played in the right spirit.
